Classical ballet smoulders with the slow burn of Argentine tango when PointeTango, hailing from Buenos Aires and Montreal, returns to the fringe after a two-year absence. This all-new, slickly paced one-hour dance show features the breathtaking artistry of choreographer/dancer Alexander Richardson and Erin Scott-Kafadar in intimate solos and duets, with the latter seemingly on tiptoe for the entire 50 minutes as she tosses off razor-sharp footwork en pointe (and later, stilettos) when not being lifted sky-high by Richardson, eliciting loud gasps from the audience.
Highlights include duet Mi Viejo Piazzolla — performed to a poem penned for the legendary tango composer — and La Capilla Blanca, a lushly romantic pas de deux in which Richardson sweeps Scott-Kafadar across the floor with sublime grace.
Evocative digital projections and archival film footage provide further steam, including several scenes in which the “live” couple is juxtaposed with their onscreen images performing in the bustling streets of the Argentine capital, creating many delicious “trompe l’oeil” effects.

Alexander Richardson et Erin Scott-Kafadar nous transportent dans un univers envoûtant sur les mélodies de Piazzolla, Canaro et sur les poèmes de Cohen et Bukowski. Erin évolue avec une grâce incroyable sur ses pointes, tandis que les chorégraphies d’Alexander, pleines d’esprit, romantiques et élégantes, culminent dans un solo époustouflant où Erin danse mi-pointe mi-talons.
Alexander Richardson, auteur du livre multimédia en ligne « Gammes de tango : comment pratiquer et apprendre le tango argentin », nous invite à approfondir notre connaissance de cette danse fascinante. Another stunningly beautiful performance by Erin Scott-Kafadar and Alexander Richardson. This year they have really added to the production by including video on the giant screen behind them. It starts by showing scenes from Buenos Aires and then the Tangos begin. The first 5 or 6 routines feature different tangos while Erin is dancing in ballet pointe shoes.
Their dancing is incredible, the amazing footwork, artistic leg movements, and powerful lifts as they flow almost as one across the stage. It is also very sensual. There are a couple solo numbers, before they rejoin after costume changes to match some of the vignettes of them in Buenos Aires that play on the big screen between routines. Truly spectacular.

Tango, It Takes Two marks the return of the group PointeTango, Alexander Richardson and Erin Scott-Kafadar, from Argentina to Victoria. The draw of this show was simple: the physical capability of the two dancers, enhanced by pointe ballet shoes. Sometimes wearing one ballet shoe, sometimes both, the pair dance expertly to music and spoken poetry. There was great tension in seeing one dancer walk out with ballet shoes and wondering what on earth the choreography was going to be. Rife with lifts and tosses, Tango, It Takes Two showcased the performers’ mastery of dance.

Je reviens du spectacle de pointetango de Erin et Alexander, présenté au théatre La Chapelle sur la rue St-Dominique. Leur présentation est exceptionnelle. On ne s’ennuie jamais. Un spectacle de danse en direct accompagné de séquence vidéos filmées avec beaucoup de talent à Buenos aires. J’y retourne une deuxième fois, demain après-midi pour revoir le spectacle! Ce sont les plus belles danses de milongas et valses que j’ai vues cette année… Le spectacle ne manque de rien; Au début du spectacle, j’avais une petite réserve qui tient de mon coté tango-classique traditionnel, par rapport au tango dansé avec des pointes de ballerine meme si la technique de la ballerine est vraiment exceptionnelle… ces numéros du début tiennent à 75% sur la performance de la tanguéra beaucoup plus que celle du tanguéro… mais ma réserve s’est vite estompée par la suite, devant la maitrise des styles de danse amenés par le couple de danseurs. Toutes les pièces musicales sont bonnes et connues des habitués sauf… la pièce dansé par la ballerine sur la barre horizontale. Plusieurs références ont été faites aux personnages classiques du tango: Carlos Gardel, Horacio Ferrer avec un hommage à Astor Piazzolla, en langue originale et traduite en anglais. H. Ferrer est reconnu pour ne se produire qu’en castillan. Mon numéro préféré, a amené un nouveau concept scénique, qui est de voir les danseurs sur scène exécuter la meme chorégraphie que les danseurs sur le film!
